13 Lungi
(1) - A loin cloth generally in a check design from 2 yards to 91/2 yards long by 29-in. to 44-in. wide, woven from ordinary as well as mercerised cotton and sometimes from an admixture of cotton yarn with silk, rayon and mercerised cotton yarn. Worn by Mohammedans. Made on hand looms by native labour (2) - A favourite head-dress with a large part of the population in the Punjab as well as the North-west Frontier Province. It is woven in plain white, or in check and "Chini" designs mostly on primitive looms from mill_ made yarn of 20's to 40's counts. The first two varieties are used by almost all classes, especially among Hindus, while the latter called " chini " (woven with blue and white ends in alternate order) is precerred by the Mohammedans. The chief districts of production are Hoshiarpur, Jullundur, Ludhiana, Sialkot and Amritsar. Many varieties are made, each differing in some particular. The best known are as follows: - Lungi Amirana has gold thread borders. Lungi Battala, the body of the cloth is in red checks. Lungi Chaugarri has two-colour check designs. Lungi Chautani, the warp has four colour stripes, red, green, yellow and white. Lungi Chirwin has a white ground with single colour picks at intervals. Lungi Fakiri has a grey ground with single colour picks, yellow and white. Lungi Manjha has dark and light blue checks. Lungi Sated is plain white. Lungi Safed Kinaradar has a white ground and coloured border. Lungi Tirkandi has three colours in warp and weft. Lungi Tirtani has three colours in warp in three bars, red, green, yellow. -
14 Ltnters
The first ginning of cotton from the field gives cotton of normal staple, but short hairs are still attached to the seed and these are removed by a second ginning and are termed linters. These are too short in staple for spinning, and some is used for wadding for cushions, mattresses, etc. Considerable quantities are pulped and subsequently made into writing paper, rayon, explosives, varnishes, twine, wicks, etc. Linter fibre varies considerably in length, and ranges from 1/8-in. to 1/2-in. It is similar to immature or undeveloped cotton fibre, being light and weak in body and staple. The extraneous matter contained in linters is composed principally of broken hulls, small motes, a large amount of lint dust, and some oil. The colour of linters varies considerably, the principal shades being grey, yellow, green, greenish-yellow, and brown. White is rarely obtained. -
15 Madras Handkerchiefs
MADRAS HANDKERCHIEFS (Imitation, Lancashire make)Plain weave cotton fabric woven in coloured stripes 36-in. 8 yards, 80 ends and 128 picks per inch, 60's T., 40's W. When indigo or green is used the count is 50's. Other colours most in favour are grey, turkey red, chocolate and yellow. The colours are not fast. The feature of the cloth is that some of the warp yarn bleeds during finishing and tints the grey weft which gives a solid colour effect. ———————— There is a certain class of dyed cotton goods hand-woven on native looms in Madras known as " Madras Handkerchiefs." Their principal use is as dress for the native women of several of our Colonies and elsewhere. The real Madras handkerchief has a peculiar smell which never entirely disappears. Lancashire can and does produce a handkerchief at a much lower price than the hand-made article, but Lancashire cannot reproduce the smell. Owing to the absence of this smell Lancashire cannot compete, and today the native will pay twice as much for the real handkerchief, recognised by its smell, as for the Lancashire article. The hand-loom weavers in the Madras Presidency produce a large quantity of these fabrics and the style was invented there. The European variety is an imitation. The native-made fabric is 36-in. wide and 8 yards long, woven ends and 128 picks per inch, warp usually 60's grey, turkey red, yellow, chocolate, and 50's indigo and green. The weft is 40's both grey and coloured, weight about 26-oz. The yarns are generally imported grey and dyed locally with the one exception of turkey red. The colours are loose in the warp so that the grey weft is tinted. These hand-made fabrics are still better in handle and style than the imitations and are preferred in the Indian markets.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Madras Handkerchiefs

19 Pitmanbar
A silk and gold fabric, woven on hand looms in Yeola, India. This fabric is curiously woven, red on one side and yellow on the other, and its border is of gold and very dignified. Silk loin cloths are worn during the performance of religious ceremonies and during meals when cotton cloth is considered impure. It is called pitambar in Sanskrit as well as in modern languages. The word pitmanbar merely means a yellow cloth, and the probability is that this fabric was always yellow when it was first introduced, and although it is now dyed red, green, purple, orange or black, it still retains its first name, derived in all probability from the natural yellow colour of the Bombyx mori silk. Vishnu is called " Pitambar-dhari " in mythological books. This name literally means " one who bears a yellow cloth." -
